SCAFFOLD GUIDE

Scaffolding for Stucco Repair and Re-Coat: Which Scaffold to Rent

The right scaffold for stucco depends on how much wall you cover in one go. A crack repair, a patch or a fog coat on one section fits a 5 ft wide rolling tower that you move from spot to spot. A new color coat or a full re-stucco runs from corner to corner without stopping, so frame scaffold along the whole wall usually fits better. Height, ground and 80 to 90 lb bags of material decide the rest.

Which scaffold for which stucco job?

Match the scaffold to how much wall you finish without stopping. Repairs move from spot to spot, so a rolling tower fits. Finish coats run across a whole wall, so frame scaffold usually fits better.

Kireon lists its 15 ft mason-style tower for painting, siding, stucco and construction projects. It has heavy-duty steel frames on a 5 ft wide by 7 ft long base, adjustable leveling legs and heavy-duty locking casters. The 18 ft rolling tower is a Baker-style stack, and the MetalTech Baker manual says that unit is designed to be used and stored indoors and not in inclement weather or high winds. For an exterior stucco wall, start with the 15 ft tower or frame scaffold. The rolling scaffold tower vs frame scaffold guide covers the general choice.

Stucco work compared on a 15 ft rolling tower and on frame scaffold: the tower fits patches, crack repair and fog coats section by section on a 5 ft by 7 ft base and needs firm, level ground, while frame scaffold runs along the whole wall for a corner-to-corner color coat or a full re-stucco and is rented by quote
Based on Omega Products ColorTek and OmegaCoat data sheets and Kireon's tower listing.

Why does a color coat need the whole wall?

A cement color coat goes on in one continuous run across the wall. Omega Products' data sheet for its ColorTek stucco finish says to apply it about 1/8 in thick, by hand from one corner to the next, or by sprayer starting at a corner and not stopping until the opposite corner is reached. It asks for a uniform thickness to keep the color even, and for a second person to texture or float the material behind the first. A true dash finish usually takes 2 to 3 coats.

That is hard from a tower you climb down from and roll every 7 ft. Frame scaffold along the full wall lets two people work side by side from corner to corner.

A fog coat is different. Omega's OmegaCoat fog coat is a cement-based coating for keeping up the color of existing stucco. It can be brushed or sprayed, and the data sheet says multiple light, even coats give better results than one heavy coat. That work can move section by section from a tower.

How close to the wall does the platform go?

Close enough to reach the wall without leaning. Cal/OSHA Title 8, Section 1644 says the inboard edge of a metal scaffold work platform must be no more than 16 in from the wall. The tighter 7 in limit in the same rule is for scaffolds used by bricklayers and stonemasons.

Section 1644 also requires railings on the open sides and ends of any platform 7 1/2 ft or more above grade, with the top rail 42 to 45 in above the platform and a midrail about halfway. For rolling towers, Section 1646 adds two rules that matter on a stucco job: keep the casters locked while anyone climbs or works on the tower, and never put a ladder or other unstable object on the platform to gain height. Cal/OSHA rules bind employers, but they are a sound baseline for homeowners too.

How much weight goes on the platform?

Stucco is heavy, so check the load rating on the label or in the manual of the exact scaffold before material goes up. Omega packs these products in the following bags:

People, tools, bags and full buckets add up fast, so count all of it against the rating. Mixing on the ground and carrying up only what you will use next keeps the deck light and clear. Section 1644 also says metal scaffold equipment that is broken or deteriorated to the point of being structurally weakened must not be used, so look the frames over before each use.

What height scaffold for a stucco house?

Measure from the ground the scaffold will stand on to the highest stucco you will touch, then subtract about 6 ft for reach. On a one-story ranch house where that point is 15 ft or less, the 15 ft tower usually covers it. On a two-story house, the upper wall and the gable ends usually call for frame scaffold. The scaffold height guide walks through the measuring.

Section 1646 says the base of a free-standing rolling tower must be at least 1/3 of its height unless it is guyed or tied, so a 5 ft wide base matches a 15 ft tower. For frame scaffold, Section 1644 requires ties to the building at the free ends once the platform height exceeds 3 times the least base dimension.

The ground matters as much. The MetalTech manual calls for a firm, level surface under a rolling scaffold, and stucco walls often sit behind planting beds or lawn. On earth or soft material, Section 1644 puts frame scaffold legs on base plates set on a 2 x 10 x 10 in wood base, or a 1 1/8 in piece of exterior plywood.

How long to rent scaffold for stucco work?

Count curing and weather days, not only working days. Omega's data sheets give these numbers:

Kireon's 15 ft and 18 ft towers rent at the same rates. With pickup it is $99 for 1 day, $249 for 3 days or $399 for a week. With round-trip delivery and pickup within Sacramento included it is $149, $329 or $499. Longer rentals and frame scaffold are by quote. There is no deposit: you sign a rental agreement that states the replacement cost of the equipment. The rental terms cover the rest, and you can request a quote with the wall length, the height and the dates.

Who does the stucco work?

You or the crew you hire. Kireon rents and sells scaffold equipment only and does not set up, take down or supervise scaffolding on a job. Section 1644 says frame scaffolds follow the manufacturer's instructions, and that is the line to work from. If you hire someone for the plaster work, check their license with the CSLB license lookup before you sign.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of scaffold is best for stucco?

For patches, crack repair and a fog coat on one section, a 5 ft wide mason-style rolling tower works. For a new color coat or a full re-stucco, frame scaffold along the whole wall usually fits better, because the finish has to run from corner to corner without stopping.

Can I use a Baker scaffold for stucco?

MetalTech says its Baker units are designed to be used and stored indoors and should not be used in inclement weather or high winds. For an exterior stucco wall, a mason-style tower with 5 ft wide steel frames or frame scaffold is the better choice.

How far from the wall can a scaffold platform be?

Under Cal/OSHA Title 8, Section 1644, the inboard edge of a metal scaffold work platform must be no more than 16 in from the wall. A tighter 7 in limit applies to scaffolds used by bricklayers and stonemasons.

How heavy is a bag of stucco?

It depends on the product. Omega packs its ColorTek finish in 90 lb bags, Diamond Wall Pro base coat in 80 lb bags, Exterior 2N1 Patch in 50 lb bags and OmegaCoat fog coat in 25 lb bags. Count them against the load rating of your scaffold.

How long does stucco take to cure?

Omega says its Diamond Wall Pro base coat and Exterior 2N1 Patch fully cure in 7 to 28 days, and its ColorTek finish reaches full strength in about 28 days. ColorTek should dry within 24 hours at 70 F and 55% relative humidity.

Does a stucco scaffold need guardrails?

Under Cal/OSHA, yes, on the open sides and ends of any platform 7 1/2 ft or more above grade. Section 1644 puts the top rail 42 to 45 in above the platform, with a midrail about halfway between.
